Best Practices for Going LIVE ?

With the advent of¬†Facebook Live¬†and¬†Instagram Live Stories, brands now have so many opportunities to connect with fans in real time. With the push of a¬†button, anything can become broadcast-worthy. Here are some solidified best practices to guarantee‘going live’¬†success.

First, let’s talk benefits.¬†‚¨áÔłŹ

  • Both platforms support¬†live broadcasts¬†happening in real time, shot with¬†app¬†cameras
  • Both platforms ping¬†their users¬†via enabled push notifications¬†that a brand they’re following¬†is going live
  • Both platforms¬†allow viewers to engage¬†with the video so the creator can respond or react in real time
  • Both platforms give the content creator a¬†running tally¬†of how many people are viewing in real time

Secondly, here are some best practices. ‚¨áÔłŹ

Facebook live:

  • Write a keyword rich and compelling headline and description.¬†Use the same strategy you employ on YouTube (hello, metadata). It also provides an opportunity for replay viewers to know what they’re getting into before tuning in
  • Use the comments section to help promote your point of view with relevant adjacent information.¬†In essence, add¬†links, in real time¬†to relevant content and/or CTA‚Äôs
  • Download the live video to save and repurpose.¬†Expand your assets’ shelf life by downloading, saving and repurposing later on other platforms. As they say, ‘revive the archive.’
  • Always post the live experience as a saved video after broadcasting.¬†This is so anyone who missed anything can hit replay to pick up where they left off
  • Tag relevant people afterward.¬†Tag anyone involved in the video in the comments section to continue the¬†conversation¬†and involve appropriate parties and their followings into the mix as well

Instagram live stories:

  • Advertise ahead of time with a static post of what you’re going live about.¬†It’s all about the pre-work
  • Create a¬†sense of urgency with your messaging so viewers tune in.¬†Instagram live videos exist only when it’s live broadcasting. Once it’s over, it disappears. This creates a sense of ‘watch it now’ which is great to leverage whenever possible
  • Recap and update along the way.¬†If your live video is longer in nature, give recaps and updates to your watchers so everyone has full context of what you’re discussing
  • Engage with your fans by using the comments section¬†in real time to interact, react and respond!

Let us hear about your experiences with Facebook Live or Instagram Live Stories stories! What has worked for you? Any compelling takeaways to share?
